Team TGG Bios

Meet Brian Lee! (Our resident pew-pew guy.)

Brian with his henna METAL GOAT tattoo. And the artist.

Here we are with another in our Team TGG bios! Today we’re going to talk to Brian Lee.

Hello. Hello.

So when did you start working at TGG? November 1st of 2018. Coming up on four years!

What’s your title? System Integration Developer. I do some stuff on the “backend.” (Dear reader, he’s being humble. This guy moves data around like nobody’s business.)

We’ll leave it at that. Tell us about the thing that’s kept you at TGG for four years now. My co-workers and Molly and Bryce (our company CEO and Consulting Lead, respectively.). Everyone has been cool to work with and are really decent people.

Are there any projects that you’ve worked on at TGG that you’re particularly proud of? I’ve been working a lot recently with our utility clients. For one client, I wrote custom code for 90-odd percent of the interface between their “micro-service architecture” and the off-the-shelf solution software. That was kinda neat.

Yes. Neat. Hold on. My head is still spinning. OK, so, where did you grow up? Spokane, WA. But I was born on a military base in Germany [Ramstein].

What do you do for fun when you’re not integrating systems? I like to listen to music. And I love reading. My favorite subjects are anthropology (mostly cultural themes - magic, ritual, religion), current affairs (esp. related to military/geopolitical happenings, intelligence agencies and the intelligence 'community'), and the occasional sci-fi. Also, I like to shoot me some guns.

You shoot guns? Where and what kind? I shoot pistols competitively.

Wow. What got you into that? My dad took me shooting in 6th grade for the first time. Both of my parents were in the military, so I grew up in a "military household". Going to airshows as a kid at the nearby air force base (Fairchild AFB in WA), being awed by footage/pictures of large machines, fast machines, and explod-ey machines. The bridge between shooting and competition shooting was playing paintball during my teenage years. Running around as a team, shooting at the other team, and getting shot at, huge adrenaline rush as a teenager, even more so when you're actually decent at it and placing in the top 5 team as a kid. I shot competitively for several years, but then drifted away from it for a bit (moved to a different state, didn't have money, etc.). Last year, I met up with an old friend at the same indoor range I had first shot at as a kid. The range had a lovely competition pistol. I decided to rent it and give it a whirl. It felt amazing. It was the spark that lit the fire in my belly to get back into competition.

Do you like to travel? I love to travel. I wish I did it more. Not really a great story, but... I met a guy on the beach of Boracay doing henna tattoos for a fair price. I was on vacay, so I figure why not? I pull up a photo of METAL GOAT on my phone. The guy does an incredible job! I'm always in awe, and envious of people who have artistic abilities. You ever wonder how much 'latent talent' is around the world, waiting to be discovered? photo attached.

Meet our resident spelunker!

Over the past month or so, we’ve been rolling out short bios of some the amazing folks that we get to work with on a daily basis. The last two folks, Andrew and Jesse, are relatively new to TGG. Today we introduce you to someone that’s been on our team for over seven years!

What is your name? Ben Sainsbury

What is your favorite color? Blue.

Right, off you go.

Sorry. Where were we? I’m Ben Sainsbury. I’m the Geospatial Solution Architect for the Gartrell Group.

OK. Wow. What does that actually mean? It means that I wear a variety of hats at TGG.

  • I work as a sys admin to ensure our infrastructure is operating correctly and our users have the access they need.

  • I work as a database administrator to ensure that queries are running smoothly and to modify/query data for clients as needed.

  • I work as a dev ops leader ensuring code is checked in and that our team is following proper protocol with branching/merging/releasing.

  • I work as an analyst providing geospatial and statistical analysis to our clients.

  • I work as a developer to compose and modify code in JavaScript, Python, C#, and SQL.

So what’s your favorite part of your job? I guess it would be a tie between getting to work with the people that I work with and the variety of things that I get to do.

Do you have any favorite projects? I love projects that involve some deep geospatial/statistical brainstorming. For these types of projects we use nTendril, a web app that we created that ties together disparate data types and makes them all play nice.

Where did you grow up? Seattle.

Besides having your fingers in so many pies at work, what do you do for fun? I like to Mountain Bike, Stand Up Paddleboard, and Snowboard. I’m also into exploring caves, and souping up diesel VWs.

Exploring caves? Tell us more! I ~ along with several others ~ discovered and mapped the (currently known) deepest cave in the United States.

Why spelunking (the act of crawling about in caves)? I like all aspects of caving; the psychological challenge of being in a dark, cold, forbidding environment, the athleticism and flexibility required to physically navigate, the camaraderie of problem solving and surveying as a group, the thrill of discovery and exploration.

Did mapping get you into caving, or caving get you into mapping? I discovered GIS partially through caving, and I definitely cut my teeth on GIS through caving, learning how to find data and use it to create suitability models (to find more caves to crawl through).

Besides crawling about in caves, do you like to travel? I do like to travel. I've been poisoned by trees, stung by scorpions, and trapped in flash floods.

OK, then. Remind me not to travel with you!

Meet Jesse!

Jesse White started working at The Gartrell Group in January of this year (2022). Let’s get to know him a little better.

Let’s start with your Job Title. I’m a Full Stack Web Developer.

Cool. So what do you DO? I mainly work on The Gartrell Group’s Utility projects to customize applications to their specific needs. Within that, I work in smaller Agile teams per project to build custom functionality for clients. This includes front-end development as well as back-end development.

What is your favorite part about the job? Getting to work on a variety of projects and tasks that require creative solutions to client problems.

Are you remote? In office? Hybrid? I just bought a house in St. Louis, so I’m 100% remote!

Where did you grow up? Portland, Oregon.

How long have you been a developer? I transitioned from business management to software development over COVID.

What do you do outside of work? You know, fun stuff! I build applications for friends, I read a lot, play music, snowboard, and spend time with my family.

Might you have any examples of some of the apps that you like to build in your free time? Sure!
